About chinese furniture
Age and origin:
Nowadays most of the antique furniture on the chinese market you find have an age between 90 - 130 Jears. If we don`t constitute otherways the age is estimated. It`s the same with the origin. Mostly you can only guess the origin of a piece of furniture unless you really know in which region it stood for the last jears. But also the producing style tells us a lot of the origin of the most pieces, because every region in china had his typical and specific style of techniques in creating furniture.( you can learn more about in:"the regions")
Every piece of furniture which have been produced before 1795 can not be carried out of china without the permission of the Bureau of cultural relicts.
Ming-style:
Through the ming dynasty (1368-1644) the furnitures were characterized by their simple, plain and classic shape with straight lines.They didn`t used to have carvings or paintings.
And if they had them, they only were very slight used as decoration.
Of course Furniture of that times are only to be seen in museums and only very rich collector`s can afford to own them. But there is still a great number of furniture of the ming-style which were produced in the Quing-dynasty and today are also being reproduced because of the timelessness of the ming-style.
Quing-style:
In the quing-dynasty the furniture´s became more complex and winding, they had much of the carvings and paintings. They got more decorative elements. But also the ming-style was produced in these times. Many Furniture`s were a mix of ming- and quing-style. So it could be possible that a piece could have a very simple shape but with very complex paintings. There are also a several of characteristics given to the furniture by the artisan`s of the different region`s of china.
